Flex Your Styling Muscle Series: Travel Sets for Ms. Kelly

A while agao, I got an SOS email from darling Kelly, a teacher by profession, regarding her upcoming trip to Boston, and her desire to pack like a pro with stylish options from her own wardrobe.  She specifically stated she wanted to bring the following from her closet:

Black Jeans, black flats, the Pieced Column Dress, Frye Melissa Boots, and a denim shirt.

They’d be doing it all: sightseeing, lunches out, dinners out, nights on the town, visiting with family, shopping, museums, etc.  And she wanted to pack light despite being gone for 9 days. I had my work cut out for me, eh?

I put together the following 10 sets focusing on versatility, (i.e., an item can be worn 2 – 3 separate times , especially the cardigans…. since they take up more room.) comfort, and ease of fabric (so she wouldn’t be walking around a wrinkled mess…); but the highly important point I wanted to state here is that when you’re traveling, you should be wearing your cute clothes!  Don’t get focused on the ease of travel and packing light alone because I guarantee I wouldn’t want to be a part of that suitcase. BORRRRRING!  Your cute clothes can be versatile, comfortable, and compliment snaggers, all at the same time despite being without 80% of your wardrobe!  And you won’t be paying extra at baggage. Promise!

I only used three pairs of shoes for her entire trip, being that shoes are the room hoggers and heavy culprits in a suitcase.  Even though you may have super awesome cute shoes for every outfit in your closet back at home, you can’t bring ‘em and travel light at the same time….. you just can’t.  I know, it’s painful.  It pains me greatly too to leave my kids unattended at home.  (hehe) Use neutral shoes instead and bring the pattern and color punches into the outfits other ways.

Sets 1 & 2: Casual Outfits. Denim shirt could be used here too.

Sets 3 & 4: The Million Pleats Midi from day to night

The Pezza Dress, Day looks plus dinner out, just with a change of shoe.

Notice here, a great way to add color and interest to an outfit, especially while traveling, is with tights and hosiery.  They’re super light to pack and offer warmth for chilly Boston at this time of year.

Black Jeans....Total work horse. Also could use the Deuxhill Cowlneck here from set #2 with boots outfit. Denim shirt could totally be used here as well.

Pieced Column Dress- two ways.

Necklaces, earrings, and belts can also be fabulous sources of color and pattern while traveling since they too don’t take up much room.  Don’t forget scarves either….but be careful on the bulk of them.  I’d pick one or two and wear it on the plane since it gets chilly high above the clouds anyway.  Wear the boots on the plane too, and girlfriend,…you might even get away with a carry on!

So, Ms. Kelly, how did I do? Will you give me an ‘A’?  Hope you loved them. Have a fantastic trip,…hopefully you’ll have a bit of room left with all these tips to do a little shoppy-shop at Anthro?  A girl can hope…

xoxo Molly
